A quiet place

SOUND:

- Because there is no sound it creates tension and gives the audience context for the rest of the movie.

- The rustling of grass and leaves in the background shows that the place is messy and unkept so it shows that is is abandoned but it also shows that they are not able to speak.

- The music is more sad and mellow when they are walking home which builds the dramatic irony and matches how the characters feel not the audiences knowledge which reinforces the idea that the characters are unsuspecting of what the audience already knows what will happen.

- When the music dies down we know we can brace ourselves for the loud sound of the rocket.

EDITING:

- We see in important parts in the scene there are some long shots in important parts to add suspense. E.g. when the little boy holds the rocket and is about to play with it.

-  But we also see some really quick changing shots to show the fast pace of some of the characters.

CAMERA SHOTS:

- All throughout the scene we have close up shots to show the expression of each of the characters.

-Like when the boy gets the rocket taken away from him we are shown that he is sad and when he nearly drops the the rocket and the sister catches it we see that she is horrified.

-But we also see some close ups to show the sign language, it focuses our attention to it and how they are not able to speak at all.

- When we also see the mum grabbing the tablets it is a close up but we are not fully able to see her emotion because she is covered up but we do see how steady and careful she is not to make a sound.

- We also have an establishing shot in the beginning to show the setting and how the streets are old, abandoned and damaged which helps us understand their world.

- It also shows that because cars are left that the accident was so bad that they couldn't escape with cars and they were abandoned.

- We are also shown the sand trail which gives the audience a little insight into the future.

- There are also low shots which show the characters feet which could show how they can't wear shoes because they have to be quiet.

- We also have a shot to show the hearing aid the girl wears and how the boy is sitting on the floor looking a bit sick this shows that we have two vulnerable characters.

- There are also a couple of over the shoulder shots to show the sign language conversation between two characters.

- We also have a zoom in on the little boy when he is drawing a rocket this shows us how it is connected later so it is something important that needed to be focused on.

- The missing people posters shows that there has been a lot of deaths

- There is also a close up on the traffic light which shows that its old and broken. It also shows that the situation was so bad that no one could fix it.

'MISE- EN- SCENE':

- There is the establishing shot at the beginning which shows the audience the empty broken streets and how the leaves are scattered everywhere and vines are growing on buildings so it shows how its abandoned.

- The dull, cloudy day can also add to the mystery.

- He missing people bored can show the deaths of thousands and how they are basically the only ones left and it adds to the airy feeling of the movie.

- The bare feet show that shoes are too loud to walk in.

- When the girl looks after the youngest boy and makes sure he doesn't make a sound shows that first she is the oldest and she has a responsibility to look after the other kids.

- The rocket is also a symbol that could represent freedom and a way out of this 'quiet place' but then later it is something that gets them into trouble later.

- The shots of the mother looking after the boy and the sister looking after the brother can show that they are a close family that look after each other and care for each other in difficult situations.

- The black screen that says day 89 straight away gives the audience some setting that a catastrophic event has occurred for the characters or world. makes us question what has happened 89 days ago.

- We see the pharmacy that has been looted but we are shown that  most noisier objects like packets of chips are all left on the shelves which shows the nature of the world.

- They also reveal new characters by when one character runs or does something in front of another to show a new person.

- The shot of the father and daughter is an important one because it establishes one of the most important relationships in the film early on.

- Suspense can be created by uncertainty but it can also be created by certainty knowing that when the little boy picks up the batteries that it will make a sound and someone will get hurt.
